James M. Shuart PRESIDENT
James M. Shuart, an experienced educator, governmental official and civic leader, is the seventh President of Hofstra University. He was born in College Point, NY and attended Hofstra where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1953 and his Master of Arts degree in 1962. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree from New York University in 1966. In 1959 the future president joined Hofstra as an admissions officer and rose steadily through the academic and administrative ranks.
Throughout President Shuart's association with Hofstra, the institution has grown from a small, local, liberal arts university to an internationally recognized University with students from across the United States and 64 countries. In addition, Dr. Shuart has stressed prudent management of finances, a factor that has resulted in consistently balanced budgets and annual surpluses, plus an increase in endowment from more than $5 million in 1976 to more than $100 million in 2000.
Dr. Shuart holds many honors and board positions including a member of NYS Higher Education Advisory Committee and the KPMG Education President Advisory Committee. Some of his many awards include Hofstra Alumnus of the Year, the Hofstra George M. Estabrook Distinguished Service Award, the NYU Founders Day Award and the Sanford V. Lenz Memorial Community Service Award from the Health and Welfare Council of Nassau County. President Shuart and his wife Marjorie, a Hofstra alumna, formerly Commissioner of the Nassau County Department of Mental Health have two grown sons, James and William.
